Twitter seems to have paused its $7.99/month Blue Blue subscription service, which allowed folks to pay for a verification verify mark, after customers have been abusing it to impersonate manufacturers and well-known folks

Twitter launched the service earlier this week in its iPhone app, permitting customers to purchase a checkmark that had beforehand been used to point out that an account was verified or official. As of Friday, the iPhone app now not reveals an possibility to join Twitter Blue.

The fast suspension of the service means that, at the least at present, Musk’s huge plan to generate new income from customers is not working as deliberate.

The paid subscription service led to a plethora of pranksters creating imposter accounts on Twitter. It left the platform much more ripe for misinformation, and plenty of checkmarks have been used to impersonate manufacturers with unflattering messages. That, too, presents a giant downside for advertisers, a few of which have already paused spending on the platform.

Some customers who already paid for the service say their paid-for blue checkmark has disappeared from their account.
